FIRST GENERATION

1. Richard BALDWIN was born in 1622 in Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, ENG.⁽¹⁾ He was baptized on 25 Aug 1622.⁽²⁾ It is assumed that Richard came to American with his father and mother, but we don't know that for sure. If so, he came on the "Martin" and was 16 years old.

He frequently appeared as attorney before the general court in New Haven. It is likely he served in some attorney's office or was perhaps working for his uncle Henry, a lawyer. His name appears on the first page of the Milford Records, 20 Nov 1639, as among "those persons whose names are hereunder written are allowed to be Free Planters, having for the present liberty to act in the choyce of public officers for the carrying on of public affayers in the plantation." He was admitted to Milford church 09 May 1641.

The location of his homestead appears in 1646 as being "Lot No. 2, three acres on the west side of the Wepawaug River, just next Lot 1 awarded Capt. John Astwood, his step-father; and on the other, Benjamin Fenn, also an eminent citizen who married his sister. On 31 Dec 1646, young as he was, he was first of a committee of five appinted to equalize the lots then divided, "in the Oyster meadow, the Round meadow, the Calf-Pen meadow, and the two fresh meadows, Dreadful Swamp meadow, the Beaver Pond meadow, and other parcels not yet disposed of."

He was married to Elizabeth ALSOP (daughter of John ALSOP and Temperance GILBERT) after 5 Feb 1642 in Milford, New Haven, CT.^{(1) (3)} On 5 Feb 1642, Elizabeth Alsop joined the Milford church under her maiden name. We therefore conclude that her marriage to Richard occurred some time afterwards. Richard BALDWIN and Elizabeth ALSOP had the following children:
