Cumberland County Lookups Available
I'd be glad to do lookups for anyone who needs them. I have the following three
publications:
HISTORY OF THE BIG SPRING PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
This book, written in 1898 by Gilbert Swope, covers this historic Newville, PA,
church from the period 1737-1898.
The book is indexed and therefore easily searched for reference purposes. Data
on members, marriages, and baptisms is sketchy prior to 1799 and gets
increasingly better after that. This book is also available on film at any LDS
Family History
Center. The film number is 427430.
HISTORY OF FIRST UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
This book, compiled in 1980 by Georgia Rife, covers Newville's First United
Church from 1764 through 1978. It is basically
a reprint of J. B. Scouller's "History of the United Presbyterian Church of Big
Spring" first published in 1878 and then
updated for the next one hundred years by the compiler and her associates,
using existing church records. Records
of individual events, such as marriages, baptisms, etc., do not exist for years
prior to 1828. This book is not
indexed so I cannot look items up having only the name.....I need an
approximate year also.
ATLAS OF CUMBERLAND COUNTY, 1858
This atlas, first done by Henry Bridgens and then reprinted in book form by the
Cumberland County Historical
Society, shows every property owner in the various townships of Cumberland
County in the year 1858. Although this
means it is mostly farms, there are also detailed maps of Carlisle,
Mechanicsburg, Newville, and Shippensburg.
These excellent town maps show individual lots (with the owner's names) as well
as street layouts. The book is
indexed.
